Jamie Carragher has praised Erling Haaland for his rapid reaction to Alisson fluffing his clearance for the opening goal of Manchester City vs Liverpool on Saturday.
City drew 1-1 with the Reds at the Etihad Stadium in the day’s early kick-off, and it was probably a fair result in the end.
That said, Ruben Dias’ goal that was ruled out for a foul by Manuel Akanji on Alisson was very, very questionable.
But City weren’t quite at it in the final third.
But one man who was at it in the first-half was the inevitable Erling Haaland – whom Micah Richards wants to see for the next 10 year at City. Last night on Monday Night Football, Jamie Carragher could not hide how impressed he was with his goal…
Jamie Carragher noticed something Erling Haaland did just before scoring vs Liverpool
Last night ahead of the Fulham vs Wolves game, Carragher analysed the City-Liverpool game and looked at the Haaland goal.
It came about because of a poor clearance by Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson. It was a good finish by £51 million star Haaland, but Carragher was more taken by how quickly he reacted to the giveaway by Alisson.
He said: “Straight away, look at Haaland now, he’s coming in for the rebound (from a Phil Foden shot). Now the quick kick, What I love about this now is that a lot of strikers will think ‘that’s going up the other end of the pitch, I can have a rest’. But he doesn’t. Liverpool push up as they should but just keep an eye on Haaland – he sprints up.
“That sprint to make sure he’s back onside… it’s a poor kick, now he’s ready to play. He’s not being lazy. That small little detail gives him that position where he can now get involved.”
Haaland has an insatiable appetite for goals
It was a really well-taken goal by Haaland for his 50th in the Premier League, with Sky Sports’ Gary Neville lauding him for reaching that tally so quickly. But it’s good of Carragher to highlight the bit before he takes the shot.
This, after following in Foden’s shot to potentially try and score a tap-in, just demonstrates the insatiable appetite he has for scoring goals. He knew instantly there would be a chance for him to score if he got himself into the correct position.
Luckily, Nathan Ake was able to dribble into space and find him with the pass, and then the finish into the bottom corner was superb.
Truly, it is a lesson for all young footballers looking to become top goalscorers.
