Ederson bounced back from a shaky display against Real Madrid on Tuesday to help Manchester City hammer Newcastle on Saturday.
The Manchester City No.31 remarkably grabbed his third assist of the 2024/25 Premier League campaign – firing a perfect pass over Kieran Trippier and into the path of Omar Marmoush for the Egypt international to score his first goal in sky blue.
In doing so, the South American glovesman notched his sixth assist, breaking the Premier League record for most assists by a goalkeeper – overtaking Paul Robinson – a statistic Joe Hart reacted to on BBC Match of the Day during a chat about Ederson.
What Joe Hart said about Ederson after 4-0 Manchester City win
The 37-year-old was famously given the boot by Pep Guardiola upon the Spaniard’s arrival in England, in favour of a glovesman more comfortable with the ball at his feet in Claudio Bravo.
Ederson – who Jamie Carragher feels needs replacing – later displaced the Chilean.
Therefore, some may presume Hart has mixed feelings when it comes to praising anything a Manchester City goalkeeper does under Guardiola, but the man from Shrewsbury reacted with humility after being told the aforementioned statistic.
The man who made 348 appearances for Manchester City praised Ederson, suggesting the other goalkeepers on this list were not as deliberately creative as the Brazilian, saying: “Top of the assists, Premier League. Trust me, a lot of those goals (assisted by the others) will be long goal kicks, that have just (caused) a scrap and someone’s managed to score.”
| Player | Assists |
| Ederson | 6 |
| Paul Robinson | 5 |
| Pepe Reina | 4 |
| David Seaman | 4 |
| Alisson | 3 |
| Tim Howard | 3 |
| Peter Schmeichel | 3 |
| Jussi Jaaskelainen | 3 |
| Mark Crossley | 3 |
Gary Lineker then quipped: “Where are you (on the list) Joe?”
Hart took it well, replying: “I think that’s why he’s playing and I’m sat here!”
How many assists did Joe Hart register throughout his career?
Despite being a remarkable shot-stopper during his prime years, Hart, who Micah Richards adores, was nowhere near as productive as Ederson when it comes to assists.

The winner of four Golden Glove awards notched just one assist in 340 Premier League appearances throughout his stellar career, shining in an era where goalkeepers were nowhere near as strongly judged on their ability with the ball at their feet.
