John Stones has been one of the fulcrums of Manchester City’s success for approaching a decade now.
Pep Guardiola was desperate to sign John Stones when he joined Manchester City and the ball-playing defender became his second arrival following Ilkay Gundogan.

However, he bounced back to be one of City’s best and most important players in recent seasons and was an instrumental part of the Treble squad in 2022/23.

John Stones new position
Stones has been a defender for the entirety of his career. Though predominantly a centre-back, he has often filled in at right-back for City and proven just as capable on the flank.
Stones is also comfortable playing in a back-three as well as a back-four, which he did with great success for England and on rare occasions for the Blues.
While Stones remains a defender first and foremost, Guardiola has given him a new role over the last two seasons, which he has proven fantastic at.
The 29-year-old has been tasked with moving out of defence, either from the middle or the right, into the centre of the park to become an extra midfielder when City have possession.
It’s an extremely challenging job as it means Stones in effect plays in two different positions but he has proven himself to be a brilliant midfielder and was City’s best player in the Champions League Final win over Inter.

Speaking on his new position to BT Sport, via Sky Sports, last season after a game, Stones explained how tough it had been to get to grips with playing as a midfielder.
He said: “[It’s been a] big learning curve for me in positioning, being unselfish, knowing when to create space for others.
“It doesn’t come naturally, but I’m learning all the time and giving for the team first and foremost.”
John Stones nickname
Manchester City fans affectionately refer to Stones as the ‘Barnsley Beckenbauer’, comparing him to the legendary Bayern Munich and Germany sweeper Franz Beckenbauer.
When asked about the nickname on the FA Cup’s official YouTube channel in 2023, Stones said: “I’m not too sure on it, to be honest.
“I know a lot of people say it but I try and steer away from it. It’s nice to be likened to someone like that and if things like that come, I’ll smile at them.”
