It has been claimed that Manchester City and Liverpool have an equal chance of signing Kylian Mbappe.
With Mbappe’s contract at PSG set to expire in the summer, journalist Dean Jones revealed on the Ranks FC podcast (via Patreon) that Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp’s sides are the English teams that are the likeliest to be able to land the Frenchman.
Recently, West Ham United striker Michail Antonio gave the Sky Blues the edge over the Reds when it came to their prospects of signing the five-time Ligue 1 winner, as he believes they are the only Premier League capable of affording his wages.
Journalist: Manchester City and Liverpool would be “tied” if they tried to sign Kylian Mbappe
However, the French captain has been linked with a move to Real Madrid for several seasons.
But recently, the former AS Monaco talisman’s entourage told RMC Sport that the World Cup winner had not struck an agreement with any club, including the Spanish juggernaut.
When it comes to the Premier League, Dean Jones believes Manchester City and Liverpool are neck-and-neck when it comes to their chances of signing Kylian Mbappe.

“I was trying to think of a mini-ranking between these clubs themselves and who I would give the best chance of signing Kylian Mbappe, and I came out tied between Liverpool and Man City. He gets linked with Liverpool pretty regularly, Liverpool play it down pretty consistently, but when you consider Liverpool as a football club, the combination of the project and ambition and how they want to be more of a global brand than they already are, Mbappe works”, he said on the Ranks FC podcast.
“What doesn’t work is the figures, but Mo [Mohamed] Salah might leave and if that Saudi Arabia deal did come for Salah in the summer and Liverpool got a big lump sum and got his wages off, that’s the only time you can think Liverpool can contemplate bringing in Kylian Mbappe because you’re replacing one of Liverpool’s lifetime icons.”
The treble-winners must give signing Kylian Mbappe a shot
While it will be a challenge for Manchester City, Liverpool or any club to get a deal over the line for Kylian Mbappe, when the chance presents itself, it would be outrageous to run away from it.
The Frenchman is one of the best players of his generation and up there with Erling Haaland as a truly generation-defining talent.
The prospect of Kylian Mbappe further enhancing his game under Pep Guardiola is a mouthwatering one as well.
Considering City lack a natural winger in their ranks apart from Jeremy Doku, targeting the Paris Saint-Germain superstar’s signature would also address a problem position in their squad.
Regardless of whether the Sky Blues come out on top in the battle to sign Mbappe, generational players like him are always worth trying to land.
