Manchester City are reportedly on the verge of completing one of their most significant transfer deals in recent memory.
Specifically, it was claimed earlier this week that the Blues have agreed a club-record fee to sell Julian Alvarez to Atletico Madrid for €95m (£81m).
The Manchester club only paid £14m to sign the striker from River Plate back in 2022, so it’s safe to say they will be making a significant profit on him if his move to Atletico goes through.
Now though, with the 2024/25 season about to kick off later this month, a journalist has shared some behind-the-scenes details on the Argentine’s reported move to Madrid.
- Who is Julian Alvarez? The story of the striker who won it all at Man City before joining Atletico Madrid

Journalist shares details on Julian Alvarez’s medical with Atletico Madrid
In a recent post on his official X account, journalist Cesar Luis Merlo had this to say on the matter.
He said: “Julian Alvarez will undergo a medical examination on Monday and, if everything goes well, he will sign with Atletico de Madrid until June 2029.”
This is a great deal for City
Across his two seasons as part of Pep Guardiola’s side, the 24-year-old appeared in 103 games across all competitions.
Scoring 36 goals and providing 18 assists along the way, Alvarez has won multiple trophies during his time at the Etihad Stadium.
Despite that, earlier this summer, the Argentina international told the media that he wasn’t particularly pleased to be left out of some of City’s biggest games last season.
Given the significant profit City would be making on the striker with this particular deal, it’s easy to see why the club have been willing to let Alvarez leave this summer.
Now that Merlo has shared when the World Cup winner is set to have his medical at Atletico and officially sign his contract, this shows that the end to this particular transfer saga is in sight.
