Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson has revealed that he predicted his side would win the Champions League final long before they took to the pitch in Istanbul.

City ended their Champions League hoodoo by beating Inter Milan 1-0 in the final last month, and in doing so completed a historic treble.

A tight contest was decided by a Rodri strike 20 minutes from time, but at the other end of the pitch, Ederson certainly played his part.

The Brazilian goalkeeper made several important saves to keep Inter at bay, most notably an injury-time parry that proved to be City’s final touch of the ball.

Ederson saw City’s Champions League triumph coming

At the final whistle many of City’s players rushed over to their supporters at the other end of the Ataturk Olympic Stadium, but Ederson sank to his knees and wept.

Speaking to The National during a summer vacation in Abu Dhabi, the 29-year-old explained the emotions of that night, and also revealed that he foresaw City’s final triumph.

“Honestly, after the Champions League final, I was crying with happiness,” he said.

“It’s been so difficult for the players, we’ve been trying every year to win this competition and it’s been a long time.

“This year, I made a note in my phone that we will win the Champions League and I thought we would do it, but there’s no way to expect the treble.

“We’re so happy it came this way, we’ve made history for the club and it’s incredible for this country too.

“People have asked how it feels to be a treble winner but to me, it’s something that I’ll remember more in 10, 20 years’ time.”

At times last season some questioned Ederson’s abilities, in particular his shot-stopping.

He soon silenced his critics with a string of fine performances as City chased the treble, cementing his place as City’s number one of the foreseeable future.
