Perhaps the biggest shock of the ongoing summer transfer window is that Nico Gonzalez could depart Manchester City.
Manchester City News exclusively revealed that Nico could leave the Etihad Stadium this summer and the club are also prepared to entertain bids for him this summer.
The Spaniard’s time at the Etihad Stadium has been puzzling, with Pep Guardiola starting him in just 11 out of the 23 games he has been available in, despite coming in as an emergency signing during the winter transfer window.
Considering Manchester City signed Nico for £50 million, the fans are upset with the club for being open to offloading him and not giving the midfielder of a chance to prove his worth.

Man City fans left upset as Nico Gonzalez could be sold
One fan claimed that Manchester City looking to sell Nico Gonzalez is a bad look on their decision-making as an institution, writing: “Why on Earth would we spend £50 million on someone to then deem him sellable 6 months later? I rarely criticise the decision-makers at City but that is staggeringly bad.”
A second supporter claimed that they would be furious if the former Porto midfielder was sold but the old guard of Mateo Kovacic, Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan were kept by Pep Guardiola and Co: “I will be absolutely enraged if this happens. Losing another quality player to keep the likes of Kovacic, Bernardo and Gundo around for just one more season. Keep him. He will play a lot the season after next once they go. Would be a huge mistake to let such a talent go.”
A third Manchester City fan claimed that it makes no sense for Nico to be on the chopping block so early into his time at the Etihad Stadium: “Can someone explain to me what I’m missing here? Came in during a dire period and still looked solid, 23 years old, can play in the [number] six or eight [roles]. Never shown any attitude problems. Surely you don’t get your money back after six months either.”
Another supporter admitted he does not “recognise” City due to their latest decision, writing: “Tell me how the 23 year old with legs is the issue here? But in Pep’s book, [Manuel] Akanji can cosplay as a defensive midfielder, Kovacic is a guaranteed starter when fit and somehow Pep still acts like Bernardo Silva is prime [Andres] Iniesta, I don’t recognise my club bro.”
A fifth City fan urged Hugo Viana to sell the likes of Bernardo, Gundogan and Kovacic and keep the 23-year-old instead: “Please Viana, bin off Gundo and Kova anyhow. Buy out their contracts, release them. we cannot let Nico go when we are unsure of how well Rodri will hold up physically post-ACL.”
A sixth Manchester City suspects Pep Guardiola would like to let Nico leave and believes Viana should have the final say on the player: “I have said it time and time again… Hugo Viana needs to take this decision out of Pep’s hands. How can you buy a player for £50 million and then sell them 6 months later, keeping old midfielders in the team instead of Nico G that are past it? Makes zero sense.”
Nico was studying Rodri’s game and seemed determined to impress at Manchester City but it seems like he will not be given the chance to become a success story in sky blue.
What disappointed Manchester City about Nico Gonzalez
Ultimately, the La Masia graduate’s potential sale emphasises City’s issues when recruiting players over the past few seasons.
In Rayan Cherki, Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Marcus Bettinelli, City will be hoping that they have finally made the right moves.
Ultimately, Manchester City were underwhelmed by Nico’s impact upon signing him during the winter transfer window, as per Fabrizio Romano.
Romano revealed that City do not view the ex-Barcelona technician as a “crucial” part of City’s project, saying: “It’s still not something guaranteed, it’s not something that’s 100 per cent guaranteed because it will depend on the proposals but Nico Gonzalez’s situation could be one to watch in case of good proposals, in case of good opportunities, he doesn’t look to be so important in the rotations of Manchester City. At the moment, still, the feeling that the player is not that crucial for the project, they invested a lot of money in January.”
