As seems to be the case every summer, Harry Kane is being linked with a transfer away from Tottenham Hotspur – he won’t be joining Manchester City though.
Kane is one of the best strikers in Premier League history, so it came as no surprise that City wanted to sign him in the summer of 2021.
Pep Guardiola desperately wanted Kane to replace Sergio Aguero at the head of his attack, so City spent all summer pursuing the England captain.
However, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy refused to enter into negotiations unless City met his asking price of around £160m.
The saga dragged on for weeks until City decided enough was enough and instead bought Jack Grealish for £100m.
Now, two years on, Kane’s future is again under the spotlight.
With Spurs destined to finish eighth in the table after again failing to win silverware, there’s a feeling that at 29 years old, Kane needs to move this summer if he is to win any major titles in his career.
Speaking on BT Sport, former Spurs striker Peter Crouch ruled out a move to City.

“I did ask him the question [if Saturday’s loss to Brentford was Kane’s last home game for Spurs] and he was very diplomatic in his answer. I don’t think even he knows,” said Crouch.
“He might have ambitions to go somewhere else and potentially win a trophy but it’s not just down to him, he still has a year left [on his contract].
“There’s a man at the club that doesn’t want to lose his star player and what would it mean to these fans to lose a player of Kane’s calibre? Where can he go?
“Manchester City is sewn up now. Manchester United is the only real option I can see. You can’t go to Chelsea. You can’t go to Arsenal.
“Newcastle is potentially an option but I still feel that’s a sideways move. Newcastle have got great potential but I feel like he might as well stay at Tottenham.”
Since the Kane saga, things have worked out pretty well for City.
Guardiola’s side won the 2021/22 title playing without a recognised striker, and the following summer signed Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund.
The 22-year-old’s 36 league goals have played no small part in City securing a third consecutive title.
Wherever Kane ends up, it’s unlikely anyone associated with City will be losing any sleep.
