Ilkay Gundogan has revealed that the decision regarding his future at Manchester City is not solely down to him.

Few supporters would pick out Gundogan as City’s most important player, but this season the midfielder once against played a huge role in the club winning the Premier League title.

After topping the scoring charts in 2020/21 and pulling off final-day heroics last season, this year Gundogan has played in multiple different roles while still providing a goal threat.

On Sunday, following City’s 1-0 win against Chelsea, the 32-year-old got his hands on the league trophy for the fifth time, but the first as club captain.

The German star is loved by fans, supporters and his manager alike, which makes it surprising that his future at the club is in serious doubt.

Gundogan’s contract expires at the end of the season, and so far, there has been no indication that he will sign a new one.

Multiple reports claim that City have offered him a one-year extension, but that Gundogan, approaching the final years of his career, demands the security of a two-year deal.

Barcelona have long been an admirer of the midfielder, and are reportedly willing to give him the two years he desires.

According to David Ornstein, Arsenal are keen to bring Gundogan in as a replacement for Granit Xhaka.

Gundogan is giving nothing away

Speaking after he lifted the Premier League trophy on Sunday, Gundogan hinted at the stand-off between his camp and City’s.

“It’s not just up to me, we’re going to see what’s going to happen,” he told beIN SPORTS.

“I love the club, I love being part of this amazing team and obviously we want to finish this season with two more trophies!”

City might well have wrapped up a third straight league title, but there’s plenty more football to play before attentions turn to the summer transfer window.

Guardiola’s side will look to complete the treble when they face Manchester United in the FA Cup final on June 3 and Inter in the Champions League final on June 10.

“We have two more big finals to play for,” Gundogan said.

“The last two games of the Premier League season are going to be preparation for that, so we don’t want to drop anything. I would love to lift two more trophies.”
