Fabrizio Romano says Man City will sell £60m star cast out by Guardiola

Manchester City will look to sell Joao Cancelo this summer after he returns from his loan spell at Bayern Munich, according to Fabrizio Romano.

City are aiming to complete the most successful season in the club’s history by winning a coveted treble.

Last weekend Pep Guardiola’s side were crowned Premier League champions for a third consecutive campaign, and they will round out their season with appearances in the finals of the FA Cup and Champions League.

Neighbours Manchester United will be looking to derail City’s treble challenge at Wembley on Saturday, while Inter Milan stand between City and a first-ever Champions League triumph.

Looking at where City are now, it’s hard to believe that Guardiola’s squad was nearing crisis point in January.

Five months ago the mood in the City squad was poor, and Joao Cancelo in particular was causing an issue.

The Portuguese full-back – not for the first time – was unhappy with his game time, and Guardiola and his staff became worried that his attitude was negatively affecting his teammates.

Ultimately City took the decision to loan Cancelo out to Bayern Munich on January deadline day, and press ahead with the title challenge with just one senior full-back.

The 28-year old made 21 appearances in a Bayern shirt, scoring one goal and providing six assists.

The loan deal included a €70m (roughly £60m) purchase option, but according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Bundesliga champions have decided not to exercise it.

That means Cancelo will return to City, but Romano has reported that the club are keen to sell him.

Arsenal are a side that could be interested, with Mikel Arteta keen to work with the Portugal international again.

Barcelona have also been linked, but as reported by Romano, the Spanish club’s financial situation could inhibit their ability to meet City’s asking price.

Cancelo’s future is uncertain, but despite the key role he played for City in recent seasons, it looks clear that he will not be playing under Pep Guardiola next season.
