Julian Alvarez signs new Man City contract until 2028

Julian Alvarez has signed a new contract at Manchester City that could reportedly double his wages.

While rumours are starting to spread about who City might target in the summer transfer market, the club have acted swiftly to tie down one of the most exciting young talents in world football.

Julian Alvarez only joined City last summer, but he has now signed an improved contract in recognition of the progress he has made.

The new deal extends the end date of Alvarez’s previous contract by one year until 2028, and according to the Manchester Evening News, could see him earn up to £100,000 per week.

Alvarez is believed to have been one of the lowest earners in the first team squad, so the new deal is a reflection of the contribution he has made this season as well as his standing in world football.

Despite seeing his game time limited thanks to the incredible form of Erling Haaland, Alvarez has scored 10 goals and provided three assists in 33 appearances this season.

His stock increased dramatically at the World Cup, as he forced his way into the starting XI and played a key role in Argentina winning the tournament for the first time since 1986.

Alvarez was named the seventh-best men’s player in the world at The Best FIFA Football Awards last month.

City signed Alvarez for just £14m in January 2022, after he was recommended by City Football Group director and longtime friend of Pep Guardiola, Joan Patsy.

He remained on loan at Argentine club River Plate until the summer, when City decided to bring him to Manchester in time for pre-season.

Ever since he arrived at the club City have not only been impressed by his quality on the pitch, but his attitude and application off it too.

Pep Guardiola has on multiple occasions praised Alvarez’s patience, and said that if it wasn’t for Haaland, Alvarez would be scoring incredible numbers for City.

What has Alvarez said?

On his contract extension, Alvarez told City’s website:

“This is a very proud moment for me and my family. For a club like City to put their faith in me like this is amazing.

“I have been really pleased with my first season here, but I have plenty more I can do. I know I can be better, and City offer me everything I need to fulfil my potential.

“This is a club that looks after its players, and I have felt so supported throughout my time here.

“I am now focused on getting better and helping City win trophies.”

City’s director of football Txiki Begiristain said:

“Julian has impressed everyone at Manchester City with his technical ability, dedication and attitude.

“His progress so far has been really good, but we are now fully focused on developing his game even further and turning him into one of the best strikers in world football.”
