‘I think he’s the best’: Steven Gerrard says nobody comes close to £55m Man city player

Steven Gerrard has named one Manchester City midfielder as the best in the world in his position, but is should probably come as no surprise.

City have been blessed with incredible midfielders during Pep Guardiola’s tenure in charge.

Ilkay Gundogan was the Catalan manager’s first signing at the Etihad Stadium, and ended up captaining the club to a historic treble.

Bernardo Silva has managed to combine technical brilliance and work rate like few players ever have, while Rodri has established himself as the best holding midfielder in the world.

That’s not to forget the likes of Yaya Toure, Fernandinho and David Silva, who all played major roles in an era of City success.

However, Kevin de Bruyne arguably stands above the rest.

The Belgian maestro is entering his ninth season as City’s creator-in-chief and – in getting better every season – is seemingly defying the laws of nature.

De Bruyne has won five Premier League titles at City, as well as two FA Cups, five League cups and one Champions League.

He’s the two-time winner of the PFA Players’ Player of the year, and in 2022 he came third in the vote for the Ballon d’Or winner.

Gerrard hails KDB best in world

Now Gerrard, a midfield great of the game in his own right, has named the City man as the best midfielder in the world.

“I never really played against De Bruyne, although I think he’s the best midfielder in the world right now,” the former Liverpool captain told the Professional Footballers’ Association.

Gerrard was tasked with selecting a five-a-side team from previous winners of the PFA’s award.

The former England star decided to only pick players he had played against or alongside, but he wanted to give De Bruyne the recognition he deserves.

“We definitely need to get there in there, yeah? Because I love De Bruyne,” he said.
