Club believe Man City have a plan to persuade £50m player to stay

Bayern Munich believe that Manchester City have a plan to try and persuade Kyle Walker not to leave the club this summer.

Walker played a key role for Pep Guardiola’s side last season, as he has done in every campaign since he joined the club from Tottenham in a £50m move in 2017.

The right-back finished the season with Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League winners’ medals around his neck, but his future at City remains uncertain.

Walker was unhappy with his game time last season, particularly after the Qatar World Cup when Guardiola adopted a four-centre-back system.

The 33-year-old began to feature less as the season progressed, although he did start 11 of City’s final 13 matches due to an injury sustained by Nathan Ake.

Walker was particularly disappointed to be left out of the starting line-up for the Champions League final against Inter Milan, although he did come off the bench late on to help City see out a famous 1-0 win.

City to copy Bayern approach

The England international has reportedly told City of his desire to leave, with Bayern Munich being his preferred destination.

The Bundesliga champions are keen to sign Walker and have reportedly offered him a two-year deal with the option of a further 12 months.

The two clubs discussed the situation last week while both were on pre-season tours in Japan, but no agreement was reached.

Now, according to Bild journalist Christian Falk, Bayern believe that City are going to copy their proposal and offer Walker a two-year (plus 12 months) contract in a bid to persuade him to stay at the Etihad Stadium.

MCN view: City approach sensible

City would love Walker to stay – he proved last season that he is still more than capable of performing at the elite level.

However, it would be foolish to offer a 33-year-old full-back a contract with anything longer than two years guaranteed.

If he still wants to join Bayern then City will have to make do without him.
