Pep Guardiola has given an update on the captaincy situation at Manchester City following the departure of Ilkay Gundogan.
Success has been a constant theme at City under Guardiola’s management, but the identity of the captain lifting the silverware has been anything but.
City have had three different captains since Vincent Kompany left the club in 2019, but none have lasted more than one season.
David Silva wore the armband during 2019/20, and was replaced by Fernandinho when he returned to Spain.
The Brazilian midfielder lasted two seasons as skipper before he left at the end of his contract last summer, and Gundogan has just done the same after one term leading the team.
City were keen to keep the German midfielder at the Etihad Stadium, but the 32-year-old turned down the offer of a new contract in favour of joining Barcelona.
That means for the fourth summer in five, City are having to appoint a new club captain.
Pep gives captaincy update
Speaking on Tuesday ahead of City’s pre-season friendly against Bayern Munich in Japan, Guardiola was asked about the captaincy situation.
“I think we will choose the new captain when we return to Manchester, when the squad is complete,” the City boss said.

It remains to be seen whether Guardiola meant before the start of the new season or at the end of August when the transfer window closes.
MCN view: Two obvious choices
City have a five-man leadership team, so there are a number of obvious candidates who could step up into the main role.
Ruben Dias is the man many fans would like to see wear the armband, as his professional attitude on and off the field – coupled with his fearless playing style – makes him well-suited to the role.
Rodri is in with a shout too, as like Dias he was a member of the leadership team last season.
Kevin de Bruyne was vice-captain last season, although it’s thought he isn’t particularly keen to become club captain.
Kyle Walker was also part of the leadership team last season but looks set to complete a move to Bayern Munich.
As has been the case in recent seasons, the new captain will be chosen by player vote.
