Man City still think ‘exceptional’ player wants to sign for them this summer

Manchester City are seemingly on the hunt for new signings in the summer transfer window.

On Tuesday, it was reported that City are eyeing signings at this moment in time and are willing to explore an array of targets until deadline day.

Pep Guardiola’s side will be looking to win more than one major trophy as compared to their Premier League-winning campaign last season; an objective that will demand them to bolster their world-class squad even further.

During Manchester City’s reign at the top under Guardiola, one takeaway from their rousing success has been the importance of adding quality to a team that is already elite-standard to continue winning silverware.

Midfield is an area of the Sky Blues’ squad where some of their mainstays are ageing, with Kevin De Bruyne (33), Bernardo Silva (30) and Mateo Kovacic (30) all not getting any younger.

How Man City feel about Premier League star’s desire to sign for them

While Phil Foden, 24, could potentially emerge as the heir to De Bruyne’s throne, City lack too many midfielders in their squad who are entering their prime.

Rodri, 27, is certainly one of them who is at the peak of his powers and could continue his status as one of the world’s best midfielders for a few more years at least.

But after getting injured in the European Championship final between Spain and England, the £62.5 million man’s durability could be at risk after playing as many minutes as he has for club and country in recent years.

However, The Athletic have revealed that Manchester City still believe Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimaraes — once described as an “exceptional holding midfielder” by Pep Guardiola via City’s official website — is interested in signing for them.

As a result, it has been claimed that the English giants could reignite their interest in signing Guimaraes even if the possibility of a move going through seems extremely unlikely now.

While City are believed to be satisfied with the make-up of their squad despite Julian Alvarez’s recent move to Atletico Madrid, they are on the lookout for an inexpensive, top-class and versatile player who would be content with not playing every game instead of a direct replacement for the 24-year-old.

Last week, Guimaraes confirmed he will stay at Newcastle after constantly being linked with a move to Guardiola’s side.

In June, journalist Ben Jacobs claimed that Guimaraes would happily join City if his £100 million release clause — as stated by Fabrizio Romano clause was triggered by the club — which expired at the end of June 2024 without any side paying the sum in question.

Man City should try their best to make audacious Bruno Guimaraes swoop

Considering Manchester City seem to believe the Brazilian remains interested in joining them, they should try their best to sign the versatile midfielder — despite there being less than three weeks left in the transfer window.

Guimaraes’ ability to play as a defensive midfielder and further forward is seemingly the tactically flexible profile of player City are looking for currently.

However, Newcastle will likely either reject all potential offers for their talismanic technician or demand the Sky Blues to pay a king’s ransom if they wish to sign the former Lyon orchestrator.

Regardless of whether City succeed or fail, Guimaraes is a player who merits the club at least trying to bring him to the Etihad Stadium while also assessing alternative transfer targets.

The ball would be in Newcastle’s court, which will make it a difficult transfer for the Sky Blues to execute.
