As shared by City Xtra, Manchester City loanee Tommy Doyle, who is currently at Sheffield United was named the Player of the Match as his side did the unthinkable by knocking Tottenham Hotspur out of the FA Cup.
The Championship club beat Cristian Stellini’s side 1-0 to book their place in the quarter-final against Blackburn Rovers.
Tommy Doyle, who ran the show against Tottenham made Manchester City proud with another stellar showing for Sheffield United on loan and that too against one of the best teams in the Premier League.
Back in February 2021, Pep Guardiola was extremely complimentary of the Englishman, whose grandfathers on both sides of the family in Mike Doyle and Glyn Pardoe represented the club and are regarded as heroes.
“He is a good player, it’s not the first time playing in the games. He’s a player with a special quality. He takes it, shoots. Another Man City fan. A historic family, the historic Doyle family”, the Catalan told Manchester Evening News.
It seems as if Tommy Doyle proved Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola right by being named the Man of the Match for Sheffield United against Tottenham in the FA Cup.
A return seems unlikely for the time being
While seeing the 21-year-old academy talent boss proceedings against Spurs warms the heart, it is unlikely that he will be set for a place in the first-team anytime soon.
With Manchester City heavily linked with midfielders such as Jude Bellingham, while Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva could be out of the door next summer, it seems improbable that the club will place their trust in Tommy Doyle next season, even if he showed against Tottenham that he can shine against the very best.
As things stand, only further loan spells seem to be in the youngster’s destiny so he can accelerate his development at senior level.
