It has been reported that Manchester City are joined by Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United in the race to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen.

This revelation comes from 90 Min’s Graeme Bailey, as the Sky Blues look set to overhaul their squad in the summer, especially with Ilkay Gundogan’s contract expiring in the summer and Bernardo Silva attracting strong interest from PSG.

Now, it seems as Manchester City have set their sights on signing Florian Wirtz next summer, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United are keen on his signature too.

With Kevin De Bruyne also turning 32 in June this year, the Sky Blues may have to rebuild their midfield in particular.

In the event that Gundogan ends up staying put at the Etihad Stadium as well, he will turn 33 in October 2023, which emphasises their ageing midfield.

However, it has been claimed that while Manchester City are enticed by the prospect of signing Florian Wirtz, who was compared to Phil Foden by Xabi Alonso via the Daily Mail and also described as ‘outstanding’ on the Bundesliga website, so are the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham and Newcastle.

Furthermore, German clubs like Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund are also looking to sign Wirtz, as well as Barcelona.

It has been stated that Leverkusen themselves are confident that their midfield wonderkid will not leave the club, as he has been tied down by a long-term contract till 2027 and secondly, he eyes a spot in Hansi Flick’s Germany squad.

However, the Bundesliga side also believe that if they are unable to climb up the table and receive a sizable offer, they may have to consider interested parties.

Targeting Wirtz makes a whole lot of sense

Considering Liverpool and Real Madrid will seemingly do it all takes to sign Jude Bellingham, perhaps Manchester City should compete with Arsenal, Tottenham and Newcastle among other clubs to sign Florian Wirtz.

In that advanced midfield role that is currently occupied by Ilkay Gundogan alongside Kevin De Bruyne is where the 22-year-old could fit in like a glove.

And after the pair leave the Etihad Stadium eventually, he could succeed them having adapted to the English giants’ style of play.
