It has been reported that Manchester City are still assessing whether to ramp up their interest in a potential transfer involving Gabri Veiga.

This comes from journalist Jack Gaughan, after it was reported on Wednesday that the 21-year-old, who has a £35.8 million release clause was attracting interest from the treble-winners.

While Manchester City are in the race to sign Gabri Veiga, it would be a case of getting ahead of oneself to assume that a deal now looks likely.

Branded as ‘special’ by Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti, the Celta Vigo youngster is viewed as an alternative to Arsenal-bound anchor Declan Rice, despite being a different profile of midfielder.

While many were surprised that Rice was even in consideration for the Sky Blues, taking into account that Gundogan played as an advanced midfielder last season, Veiga seems much closer to the club legend, at least in terms of the position he plays in.

Jack Gaughan, however has emphasised that while Manchester City have been ‘monitoring’ Gabri Veiga since March, it remains to be seen whether they will ramp up their pursuit for his signature.

Manchester City will likely look at other targets

For starters, Gabri Veiga, despite coming off the back of a tremendous campaign for Celta Vigo is still quite a raw prospect, which may not particularly appeal to Manchester City.

While City should not be expected to win the treble in the following campaign, the club would at least like to fight until the very end for every possible trophy.

As a result, it does not come as a surprise that Pep Guardiola’s men are still deliberating whether to complete his signature.

While Gabri Veiga’s potential is worth a punt, a club that has made a habit of being serial winners would always think twice before bring any player in.
