Manchester City have set their sights on a very expensive midfielder ahead of the summer. It’ll prove a tough signing to pull off, but Pep Guardiola is hopeful.

Man City look to be heading towards a major summer rebuild, after what’s been a very well-documented, poor 2024/25 season so far.

As things stand, Pep Guardiola’s side sit in 4th place of the Premier League table ahead of their Sunday showdown with Liverpool at the Etihad. The Cityzens have just been knocked out of the Champions League too, at the hands of a rampant Real Madrid side.

In the build up to the summer transfer window which opens in June, it’s reported that Man City are ready to sell a number of players, including may of their players at or coming up to the 30-year-old mark, including John Stones, Jack Grealish and a handful of other.

Several names are being linked with summer moves to the Etihad, including Newcastle United star Bruno Guimaraes who’s become quite a hot topic among City fans in the last few weeks.

Latest on Man City’s transfer pursuit of Newcastle United star Bruno Guimaraes

Man City have been linked with Guimaraes ahead of the summer transfer window. But it’s been widely reported that the move won’t be an easy one for City to pull off, and that it’ll also prove to be a very costly one too with Newcastle United keen to keep their star man and captain.

GIVEMSPORT have shared the latest on the situation. They write that ‘there is an awareness behind the scenes’ at Man City that they may end up disappointed in their quest to sign the 27-year-old Brazilian international, who’s scored twice and assisted six in 25 Premier League games for the Magpies this season.

What’s more is that City ‘will have to pay £100million’ to sign Guimaraes in the summer, but that Guardiola’s side ‘have previously been unwilling to fork out a nine-figure sum’. In the summer, Man City ‘will seek indications’ that Guimaraes is up for a new challenge at the Etihad before making their move.

Previous reports revealed that Guardiola and Guimaraes have already spoken in private, though whether it was about a move to City remains to be seen.

Kevin De Bruyne told his legs have gone at Man City

As things stand, Kevin De Bruyne is out of contract at Man City in the summer. Undoubtedly, he’ll need replacing as part of the rebuild and Guimaraes could be part of the replacement, if not the direct replacement for the Belgian who’ll leave big shoes to fill.

But the time has certainly come for Guardiola to make some changes. Speaking recently, Gary Lineker says De Bruyne’s legs have gone, along with Bruno Fernandes and Ilkay Gundogan, so the midfield area looks like the key focus for City going into the summer.

Guimaraes could be a very worthwhile signing. But at £100million, City must be sure that he’s the man to help change their fortunes, with more than one signing needed in the summer.

City’s upcoming game against Liverpool kicks off at 4:30pm on Sunday.
