Ahead of the Manchester derby on Sunday, Kevin De Bruyne has announced his upcoming Man City departure, which has prompted a response from Man United supporters.

Kevin De Bruyne always looked set to leave Manchester City this summer. And on Friday, De Bruyne confirmed his summer departure after 10 years at the club and 16 titles.

He leaves as a club legend and already there are confirmed plans for him to have a statue built outside the Etihad Stadium where he gave fans so many good memories over the years.

This next Manchester derby will be his last: should he feature on Sunday then he’ll have played Man United, Chelsea and Arsenal 22 times in his career, which is more than he’s faced any other club.

Man United fans think Paul Scholes was better than Kevin De Bruyne

Posting on X in the wake of De Bruyne’s announcement, Man United and Man City fans got into a bit of a debate on social media about who was better: Paul Scholes or De Bruyne? Of course, United fans said Scholes, whilst City fans say De Bruyne.

One United fan prompted the debate with: “Paul Scholes >> Kevin De Bruyne,” as another Man United supporter wrote: “I agree with you.”

“Scholesy on his day was world class” added another as Man United fans really began to weigh in, with comments like: “Should be common knowledge,” and even: “Undebatable actually.”

Another Man United fan said of the Scholes and De Bruyne argument: “So obvious man,” as one comment read: “Scholes was always clear of him.”

The stats prove Kevin De Bruyne was actually better than Paul Scholes

Although Scholes was a great midfielder, and someone who won it all with Man United, the stats show that De Bruyne was all round the better midfielder, and he too won it all with Man City.

De Bruyne has actually created 294 more chances than any other player in the Premier League since he arrived at City in 2015 (an incredible 827), as well as assisting more goals and creating more chances than any other player in Europe’s top five leagues in the same time.

There’s never been a player like De Bruyne and there might never be again. He’s certainly earned his statue.

Man City’s game at Old Trafford kicks off at 4:30pm on Sunday.
