Manchester City almost signed Asier Riesgo instead of Scott Carson back in 2019.
That is according to The Athletic.
So, what was said about Asier Riesgo and Manchester City? Let’s take a look…
Manchester City almost signed Asier Riesgo
Well, Carson has proven to be a hugely popular addition since initially arriving on loan from Derby County back in August 2019.
Since arriving at the Etihad Stadium, the 38-year-old has helped Manchester City win the Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.
The story from The Athletic states that Carson is adored by Pep Guardiola and his teammates at Manchester City behind the scenes, despite making just two appearances since joining the Citizens.
However, the man from Whitehaven was almost overlooked in preference of Riesgo – according to The Athletic – until Manchester City realised a homegrown option was needed.

The Spanish glovesman – who actually retired from football in July 2023 – is said to have very nearly become a Manchester City player, although Carson got the nod to satisfy the homegrown quota.
Manchester City have a decision to make with Scott Carson
When the 2023/24 campaign draws to a close, Manchester City have a decision to make regarding Carson.
The Manchester City No.33’s contract expires at the end of the season, so those at the Etihad Stadium must decide whether to extend the goalkeeper’s contract, or look to replace him with a younger option.
In our view, it would be worth keeping Carson – who Micah Richards claims ignores him – around if he is willing to stay.

The England international is no longer good enough to play regularly, although he is hardly called upon with Ederson and Stefan Ortega ahead of him in the pecking order.
Therefore – given how effective Carson is in terms of keeping spirits high behind the scenes – Manchester City should consider extending his contract by a further 12 months.
