UEFA Super Cup winners Manchester City return to Premier League action at home to Newcastle United. So, here is everything you need to know, including how to watch.
The Citizens’ trophy-laden year continued on Wednesday night as Pep Guardiola’s side beat Sevilla 5-4 on penalties. Youssef En-Nesyri (25’) gave the 2022/23 Europa League winners an early lead. But Cole Palmer (63’) told Erling Haaland to leave Rodri’s cross and responded.
Guardiola has continued to trust Palmer since selling Riyad Mahrez this summer. The winger has now repaid the Manchester City manager’s backing with goals in the Community Shield and the UEFA Super Cup. But unlike at Wembley, the Etihad Stadium team won on penalties.
Nemanja Gudelj missed Sevilla’s vital fifth spot-kick to let Guardiola’s team add another title to Manchester City’s trophy cabinet. But the Citizens’ attention now returns to their Premier League title defence as Manchester City get ready to host Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United…

Manchester City team and injury news

Manchester City will be without Kevin De Bruyne when they host Newcastle United after the Belgian aggravated a hamstring injury. Guardiola also fears the midfielder will be absent into 2024. He suffered a recurrence of an earlier injury only 28 minutes into their season opener.
The Citizens edged Vincent Kompany’s Burnley 3-0 at Turf Moor on the opening night of the 2023/24 Premier League season. Guardiola also then faced Sevilla in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday without Ruben Dias as he was in concussion protocol after a collision in training.
John Stones could return to the Manchester City team when Newcastle visit Etihad Stadium, though. The 28-year-old played the full 90 minutes of the Community Shield. But Stones sat out the trip to Burnley with an abductor injury and was an unused substitute against Sevilla.
Guardiola may also face a decision regarding Bernardo Silva’s role after he missed the UEFA Super Cup through illness. The 29-year-old had played the full 90 minutes against Arsenal at Wembley and Burnley at Turf Moor. Palmer started, and scored, in the Portuguese’s place.
Prediction: Manchester City (3) vs (1) Newcastle United

Manchester City will be confident about securing another win against Newcastle United this Saturday. The Magpies have not beaten the Citizens since January 2019. They have also only held the Etihad Stadium side to a draw in two fixtures, both of which came at St James’ Park.
Newcastle last won at Manchester City in October 2014 in the EFL Cup and have never won in the Premier League at Etihad Stadium. The Toon last beat the Citizens away from home in the top-flight at Maine Road in September 2000. Alan Shearer secured Newcastle a 1-0 win.
The Citizens have won each of their past 14 Premier League matches against the Magpies at Etihad Stadium, as well. Manchester City have even won each of their past four meetings on home soil without conceding after winning 5-0, 2-0, 5-0 and 2-0. But another 5-0 is unlikely.
Newcastle are a much stronger side under Howe and started the 2023/24 season with a 5-1 win over Aston Villa. The result will give the Tyneside outfit confidence on their travels to, at least, score once this Saturday. Aston Villa struggled to contain Newcastle’s dynamic attack.
