Marc Cucurella finally breaks silence over bizarre Erling Haaland chant

After Spain won Euro 2024, Manchester City fans were left bemused when Marc Cucurella referenced Manchester City striker Erling Haaland in a celebratory chant.

Spain beat England 2-1 in the final in Berlin, and were deserved winners of the tournament.

Inspired by Player of the Tournament Rodri, Spain were easily the best team out in Germany and the celebrations were in full swing after Mikel Oyarzabal scored the game-winning goal.

England had got back level through Cole Palmer after Nico Williams opened the scoring.

But it was defeat for the Three Lions, and delight for Spain – and Marc Cucurella was particularly overjoyed at becoming a European champion.

The Chelsea man went viral after the final for signing a song in Madrid and randomly referencing Erling Haaland.

Now, Cucurella has finally spoken about the bizarre moment.

As quoted by Goal, Cucurella said: “Cucu cucu-rella, he eats paella, Cucu cucu-rella he drinks Estrella, Haaland you’d better tremble because Cucurella is coming.”

Following this, City fans were left totally bemused.

It seemed a very random thing for Cucurella to do, especially with Halaand having not even been his opponent in the final, or having even been involved at all at the Euros.

It turns out there really was no major reason Cucurella decided to use Haaland’s name in the chant.

He said (as quoted by EFE): “Yes, also in England there was a lot of ball about that and these are things that happen. I’m very happy and I think that if someone sings a song with their name on it, it’s because they’re a top player or a world star. They wouldn’t put the name of a player who wasn’t known.

“Everyone is happy because he scored and I’m still just as happy to win the Euro. I would do it again, these are things that happen and it stays there.

“In the end in England, they took it out of context a bit and I don’t think he knew either. He read what they put on and took it a little personally. Nowadays people take things very personally, but then they had some awards and my partner (Cole) Palmer asked them about me and everything ended there. It was just an anecdote.”

Recently, Haaland’s dad Alfie suggested that Haaland took the song in good stead, insisting it is all banter.

Cucurella poked the bear

What Cucurella did after winning the Euros was quite baffling, and it is still rather unclear why he sang what he sang.

Cucurella’s antics only ended up poking the bear, with Haaland scoring his first goal of the season against Chelsea last month.

City fans were also left amused during that game when Cucurella appeared to struggle with cramp, only for Haaland to walk right by with a wry smile.

Haaland has gone on to score seven goals in his first three games and has looked absolutely ruthless. So clearly, Haaland was never too affected.
