Martin Keown believes £43m star now has too much ‘power’ at Manchester City

Manchester City have enjoyed unmatched success ever since Pep Guardiola arrived in 2016.

The legendary coach has changed the history of the Manchester club, as the 54-year-old has delivered every single trophy possible to City fans, and there are certain players associated with the club throughout this period.

Names such as Kevin De Bruyne, Vincent Kompany, Sergio Aguero, David Silva, and Kyle Walker all come to mind, and by the end of this summer, all of these will have left the Premier League giants.

Guardiola is also open to selling Ilkay Gundogan over the coming weeks, while the future of another veteran is up in the air, a player Martin Keown thinks has too much power at Man City.

Bernardo Silva has too much power at Man City

Bernardo Silva has been with Man City since 2017, a summer in which he completed a £43m move to Manchester from Monaco, and since then, the Portuguese star has grown to become a legend at the English club.

The 30-year-old is one of the senior figures in Guardiola’s dressing room, and whilst speaking on talkSPORT, Keown made the statement that Silva has too much power at Man City when talking about whether the Manchester club can bounce back next season.

“Well, this group have got a lot to follow. You know, because of what De Bruyne has achieved and Vincent Kompany and all these other guys.

“Bernardo Silva has been given a lot of power at the club at the moment. I don’t know whether they’re going to go to that same level again. Pep, we should never underestimate him; it’s incredible.

“He’s a serial winner of trophies. So you have to say that they’re still in there, they’re still in the race, but Liverpool are now in front of them.”

This was an unusual statement to make given that Guardiola has recently heaped praise on Silva’s attitude throughout the 2024/25 campaign, and it might not matter next season anyway, as the Man City midfielder could leave the Etihad Stadium over the coming weeks.

Bernardo Silva could still leave Man City this summer

Silva dreams of playing for Benfica again before his career comes to an end, and that is one option the Portuguese star could take up this summer if he is to leave Man City.

The 30-year-old’s future has been up in the air for many summers, with the midfielder linked to Barcelona, PSG and Saudi Arabia during recent transfer windows.

Silva is expected to remain at Man City for another season, as he is contracted until next summer, but if the Premier League club wants to bring in some cash for the Portugal international, the player will need to be offloaded over the coming weeks.
