Michael Owen drops verdict Arsenal fans won’t like after eventful Man City clash

Manchester City played out a 2-2 draw with Arsenal on Sunday and people are still talking about the game.

It was an incident-packed contest at the Etihad Stadium, which rather came as a surprise.

Games between the two sides have been cagey, tactical battles in recent times – but the fixture really came alive on Sunday.

Erling Haaland opened the scoring for City with his 100th goal for the club, making history by scoring 10 Premier League goals in just five games, before Arsenal then turned the game around.

Riccardo Calafiori and Gabriel got the goals for Arsenal, before Leandro Trossard got sent off just before half-time.

City then spent the whole of the second-half trying to break Arsenal down, and the pressure finally told right at the end, with John Stones popping up to score.

Some Arsenal fans have been complaining about the final result, but Michael Owen does not share their frustrations.

Arsenal fans were not happy about the sending off of Leandro Trossard.

The Belgian was already on a booking when he barged into Bernardo Silva.

Referee Michael Oliver blew his whistle and then Trossard booted the ball away, meaning Oliver had no choice but to brandish a second yellow.

There were then some complaints about the amount of injury-time that was added on. In the end, the game went to 99 minutes.

But Arsenal had wasted time in the game and had a number of players going down.

Michael Owen took to X yesterday and dismissed the complaints from Arsenal fans. For him, City were the only team that were hard done by at the Etihad due to Oliver letting Arsenal take a quick free-kick for their opening goal before Kyle Walker was fully back in position.

He said: “Great game yesterday but Arteta’s reaction and comments after were poor yet again. It was a certain red card for Trossard.

“The only team hard done by was City as Michael Oliver allowed the game to restart a couple of seconds too early in the lead up to Arsenal’s equaliser.”

Oliver’s decision to let Arsenal take a quick free-kick was criticised by many, with Alan Shearer among those to sympathise with Walker, after the defender had been called over by the referee,

Owen is right

There has been plenty of chat since Sunday’s game and understandably so given all that happened.

It is difficult to disagree with Owen though, and Arsenal cannot really have too many complaints.

Trossard was foolish to do what he did knowing referees are clamping down on players kicking the ball away, and he should not have given Oliver that decision to make.

And then, David Raya was taking so much time on goal kicks and Arsenal players went down in the second-half that the amount of added time at the end had to be high.
