A player already compared to Lionel Messi and one Manchester City have already scouted has addressed his future.

The summer transfer window is still a few months and many gruelling football matches away but Manchester City are no doubt already drafting up their recruitment plans.

Pep Guardiola has maintained his side’s incredibly high level this season, so much so that they could still potentially win an unprecedented back-to-back treble.

With Real Madrid to come in the Champions League, an FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea and a tight Premier League title race with Liverpool and Arsenal to fight, it’s going to be extremely difficult.

But the fact City are still on the hunt for all three trophies speaks volumes of their class.

Strong recruitment last summer has certainly helped, with a refresh in the squad keeping everyone hungry for more success.

Further recruits can be expected this coming summer as a result and one player who has already been linked is Florian Wirtz.

The Bayer Leverkusen forward is enjoying a great season, with 11 goals and 17 assists in Xabi Alonso’s side’s remarkable Bundesliga title charge.

Now the German has addressed his future amid speculation he could be set for a big summer move.

Florian Wirtz addresses his Bayer Leverkusen future

Speaking to Der Spiegel, via Fabrizio Romano, Wirtz said: “My focus these days is on the national team.

“And after that, I still have a lot of plans with Bayer Leverkusen.

“I don’t know what Xabi Alonso will do but my plan is clear.”

Could Man City sign Florian Wirtz?

With Kevin De Bruyne now 32 and injuries starting to catch up, another quality attacking midfielder could be on Guardiola’s wish list this summer.

Wirtz would certainly be an attractive option. The 20-year-old has already been playing well in Germany for years but has taken his game to another level this season.

City reportedly sent scouts to watch him in action back in November and he has already been compared to Lionel Messi by Alonso.

Speaking in January, Alonso, via Goal, said: “There are good players and there are players who look good on the pitch.

“The player who looks good does things that are nice, but not necessarily efficient.

“Why is Messi so good? Because he knows how and when to play simple passes.

“Messi says: ‘You’re in a better position? Here, there you have the ball!’

“It’s not always about making the most brilliant move, but the best and smartest.

“Florian can do that. That’s why he’s so good.”

However, with a contract until 2027, Wirtz would certainly cost a pretty penny but City do have options already.

Phil Foden will of course be aiming to make the central role his own while City also have Bernardo Silva, Julian Alvarez, Mateo Kovacic and Matheus Nunes who can operate in those positions.
