Gary Neville fires Erling Haaland-related shot after Tottenham defeat

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville criticised the service to Erling Haaland, as Man City were beaten 1-0 by Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

The £51 million (Sky Sports) man, who currently has 25 goals in the Premier League failed to register a single shot on the night as City’s curse at Spurs away from home lived on.

The 22-year-old was isolated throughout the contest, and struggled to impact the game like he tends to, week in, week out.

“[Erling] Haaland is not getting the service that he deserves”, said Gary Neville said on Sky Sports as Tottenham beat Man City.

Gary Neville is right but it’s a nuanced conversation

With Pep Guardiola publicly hammering his players for a drop-off in mentality in the reverse fixture, which is perhaps emphasised by Joao Cancelo’s loan exit, albeit a recent report suggesting the pair’s relationship has not broken down, the Spanish boss is playing the most motivated XI on matchdays.

As a result, players that would generally be expected to serve as backups such as Nathan Ake and Manuel Akanji, alongside a number of injury issues have become regular starters.

With unexpected drops in form as well from the likes of Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan, Man City only have a solitary creator in Kevin De Bruyne for Erling Haaland, as was evident before his inclusion against Tottenham, which explains the brief point Gary Neville is trying to make.

Ultimately, it is far from a black-and-white issue at hand and while Haaland has surpassed all expectations, those around him have not even come close.

A massive rebuild in the summer for the Sky Blues seems inevitable, which could make the criticism made by Gary Neville after Tottenham Hotspur’s win look like a thing of the past, as Erling Haaland is only getting started in a very flawed side.
