‘Of course not’: Thomas Frank makes bold Ivan Toney claim amid Erling Haaland comparison

Thomas Frank has said that if he was given the choice, he would not swap Ivan Toney for Erling Haaland.

The Brentford boss maintains this belief despite the Manchester City No.9 having broken the all-time Premier League goal record in a single season as recently as on Wednesday night.

However, Thomas Frank is happy to have Ivan Toney as his starting striker instead of Erling Haaland.

Thomas Frank would rather have Ivan Toney than Erling Haaland in his side

The £5 million (Sky Sports) man has been in stunning touch this season, bagging an impressive 20 goals in the Premier League alone.

However, the Norwegian forward is the leading goalscorer in Europe with 51 goals, with Wayne Rooney rightly branding him as the ‘best footballer in the world.’

Despite these facts being common knowledge, Thomas Frank firmly believes that he would not swap Ivan Toney for Erling Haaland.

“Of course not. If Ivan was playing in a top four club, he would score 25-plus goals. I’m convinced about that”, he was quoted saying by Standard Sport.

“I’m very happy he is playing for us and not another club and I think it is remarkable what he has done.”

MCN View: Thomas Frank is merely backing his player

While Ivan Toney has been stupendous this campaign, Thomas Frank is seemingly just sticking up for him instead of admitting that he would rather have the Sky Blues superstar in his ranks.

Some may argue that Haaland does not possess the all-round game that Toney does.

In some ways, perhaps not.

But the former Borussia Dortmund No.9 may well be the greatest natural goalscorer the Premier League has ever seen and in a transition-based system like Brentford’s, he has all the tools to thrive, as he displayed in Germany and in Austria.

One hopes Thomas Frank is simply backing his player because if not, that may be the most egregious opinion in football we have heard in ages.
