Manchester City could be about to complete one of their most significant transfer deals in recent history.
After securing the services of Julian Alvarez for £14m back in 2022, it has recently been reported that City are set to sell the striker to Atletico Madrid in a deal worth £81m.
This comes after the Argentine told the media he wasn’t too pleased at not starting some of City’s biggest games last season.
With the Manchester club on the verge of landing what would be a club record sale fee for Alvarez, this has led to one pundit sharing his thoughts on the matter and what the next step could be for Pep Guardiola and City.

Paul Scholes makes Pep Guardiola claim amid reported Julian Alvarez exit
Appearing in a recent edition of The Overlap Fan Debate, Paul Scholes had this to say on the situation surrounding Alvarez and what Guardiola could look to do following his reported exit from City.
He said: “The thing with Alvarez, he scored some important goals for [City]. Now, you can’t deny, what did they buy him for? £14m, he’s going for £81m. That’s just incredible business. You can’t say no to that.
“And I don’t think Pep will be too bothered. I don’t think he’ll be too bothered if he doesn’t have another proper number nine instead of [Erling] Haaland. He doesn’t care.
“He’ll bring another brilliant footballer into it. He’s got the [Phil] Fodens, he’s got the Bernardo Silvas. He’s got everything that he wants. He’s just not bothered about a centre-forward.”
City may have an interesting end to the summer transfer window
In two seasons at the Manchester club, Alvarez scored 36 goals, delivered 18 assists and won multiple trophies in the process.
In terms of incoming transfers this summer, the only new face to arrive at the Etihad Stadium is Savinho, who joined from Troyes last month.
Even though Guardiola has many other attacking options in his squad, it’ll be interesting to see if the 53-year-old does look to bring in a replacement for Alvarez at some point this month before the summer window closes.
