Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has said that many are hoping that every time Erling Haaland steps out on to the pitch, he has an off day.

In an interview with TNT Sports after City’s 3-1 win against Young Boys, the Catalan tactician made this claim about the £51 million (Sky Sports) man.

Pep Guardiola firmly believes that Erling Haaland has a target on his back, with many praying for his downfall.

Pep Guardiola says ‘people want’ Erling Haaland to fail

Branded as an ‘amazing guy’ by Ilkay Gundogan, the Norwegian striker has been criticised left, right and centre for being uncharacteristically wasteful this season.

Despite being the Premier League’s top scorer once again this campaign and having bagged 11 goals in all competitions, Haaland’s performances have been met with question marks aplenty.

After Manchester City defeated Young Boys on Wednesday night, Pep Guardiola pinpointed how Erling Haaland is loathed by many.

“It is important to have the chances, the people want him to fail. am sorry but this guy will score goals all his life, with the chances he is an incredible threat”, he said.

“The players need the ability to find the pass like Kevin de Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan. But he is going to score until the last day he plays football.”

Erling Haaland continues to have his sceptics

Pep Guardiola has hit the nail on the head as whether Erling Haaland is in the form of his life or if he is undergoing a low point, his critics find a way to fixate on a flaw in his game.

Some of the discourse around Haaland is critical to the extent that it almost seems like it is forgotten that he is the best striker in the world.

However, that is perhaps what comes with the territory of being at the absolute top of his craft.
