It was the news that Manchester City fans had been waiting for, as reports emerged on Tuesday evening that Pep Guardiola had agreed a new deal to remain at the club.
According to The Athletic, the City boss has agreed a one-year contract extension that would run until 2026 and see him complete a decade at the club, delighting Man City fans in the process.
His current contract is due to expire at the end of the current season, meaning his future had been a hotly debated topic at the Etihad, but any talk of the Guardiola era – which has seen the club win six Premier League titles – ending next summer will be put to bed when this news is confirmed by the club.
City fans will be hoping it will be business as usual going forward, starting with a fifth consecutive Premier League title next May, but Guardiola faces a potentially fascinating next chapter at the club, with four significant new challenges facing him.

Bouncing back from four defeats in a row
The first of these fresh challenges is an immediate one – bouncing back from the longest losing streak of his managerial career.
The defeat to Brighton before the international break was City’s fourth in a row across all competitions, with City’s on-pitch issues, including the absence of Rodri, well documented. The timing of this contract news could prove to be vital, as the City squad will no doubt be given a much-needed boost in getting clarity over their manager’s future.

| 5 | 11 | 5 | 4 | 2 | 15 | 10 | 5 | 19 |
That goes for the fans too, who will look to make the Saturday tea-time atmosphere at the Etihad a celebratory one when they look to get back on track against Tottenham.
New rivalries
Guardiola’s new deal also signals that he is relishing the challenge of a fresh set of rivals, all desperate to knock City off their perch.
Arne Slot has begun life brilliantly at Liverpool this season, while Ruben Amorim – once touted as a potential Guardiola successor at City – has got to work across town at Manchester United this week, adding a new dimension to two of City’s biggest rivalries. If you throw in Guardola’s previous assistant Enzo Maresca at Chelsea, plus his ongoing rivalry with another of his former charges in Mikel Arteta at Arsenal, there is a fascinating new managerial landscape at the top of the Premier League.

And this is a challenge that Guardiola is clearly ready to take head on, with his first clash against Slot coming on December 1.
Dealing with the 115 changes fallout
The other huge date in Manchester City’s diary is the outcome of the current 115 charges case from the Premier League. That hearing has been going on behind closed doors over the past two months and a decision is expected early in 2025.
City – who deny all charges – and their Premier League rivals are eagerly awaiting the resolution of the case which could have a seismic impact on the competition moving forwards.
But what happens now, City will have Guardiola in place to deal with any fallout, which again is a testament to the Catalan’s mentality of not shirking a challenge.

Working with a new sporting director

Finally, Guardiola will now be working without one of his key allies in Txiki Begiristain, who will leave the club at the end of the season. Begiristain joined City in 2012 and has been a constant at City during the Guardiola era.
“Part of me is leaving,” Guardiola said when asked what he will most about Begiristain. “A friend of mine, an architect who created one of the best teams at Barcelona and here. Personally he will be missed a lot.
“He made me balanced in this job. I’m so energetic and when we lose I want to destroy everything and he always said ‘take a moment’.”
Now, Guardiola will have to forge a new working relationship with incoming sporting director Hugo Viana at a time when City have key transfer decisions to make, with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Kyle Walker nearing the end of their careers.
