Manchester City’s Phil Foden knows all about what it takes to play in numerous positions across the pitch.

During his time in City’s first team, the 24-year-old has shown his versatility by playing in near enough every midfield and attacking position on the pitch.

Now that the 2024/25 season has got underway, Foden has made a claim regarding another player in the City squad that he thinks has the ability to play in a different position to the one he’s usually in.

Phil Foden claims John Stones is good enough to play in midfield all the time

Featuring in a recent video uploaded on the England national team’s YouTube channel, Foden had this to say about John Stones and his ability on the ball.

He said: “Technically very good. Showed it in massive games like the Champions League final I can see him playing in midfield he’s technically that good as well. The way he receives the ball and controls the ball.”

Stones is a useful midfield option for City

City paid £47m to sign the Englishman, who was hailed by Phil Thompson for his performances in the 2024 European Championship, from Everton back in the 2016 summer transfer window.

Since then, the 30-year-old has made 257 appearances for the club across all competitions, chipping in with 16 goals and seven assists.

As Foden mentioned, Stones has played in a hybrid midfield role before, including in the Champions League final against Inter Milan where he successfully completed all seven dribbles he attempted.

In addition to that, Jamie Carragher hailed the England international on Monday Night Football for his performance in a number 10 role in last season’s 3-1 win over Manchester City.

Now that Foden has said that he feels Stones has the ability to play in midfield on a permanent basis, it’ll be interesting to see if Pep Guardiola plays him there throughout the season.
