After Manchester City won their previous Premier League title, several figures from their squad featured in the 2024 European Championship.

In fact, City had more figures from their squad (14) selected to represent their nations in the tournament than any other side in the top flight.

After four of those players made it to the final, one of them has now found himself on the end of some praise for his efforts throughout the competition.

Phil Thompson praises John Stones after Euro 2024 campaign

While reflecting on the recent tournament, Phil Thompson had this to say on talkSPORT about how John Stones performed for England.

He said: “John Stones to me would have come out of it with a bit of credit. I thought he did very well.”

Stones was a positive light for England

This isn’t the first time someone connected to Liverpool has praised Stones, as Trent Alexander-Arnold described the City star as “exceptional” back in November (via TNT Sports).

More recently, during the tournament, Harry Kane heaped praise on the defender by saying that he is a “really clever” player who has improved his game significantly over the years.

Even though the 30-year-old only started 22 games across all competitions for Pep Guardiola’s side last season, the defender played every minute of action for England in this tournament, making him one of the three outfield players to do so.

Across those games, the six-time Premier League champion racked up more clearances (22) than any other England player and the highest passing accuracy percentage out of players in the Three Lions squad who appeared in more than one match.

Having played a prominent role in seeing England get to their first final of a major tournament on foreign soil after an underwhelming individual season with City, it’s understandable why Thompson has said that Stones was one of the shining lights for the Three Lions in this latest tournament.
