Phil Foden hit a brilliant hat-trick for Manchester City against Brentford – and fans watched the star whip out a new celebration last night.

City beat the Bees 3-1 at the Gtech Community Stadium last night, to close the gap to Liverpool down to just two points.

The Reds lost to Arsenal on Sunday, opening things up at the top, and it is now in City’s hands to go top with their game in hand.

Foden was the star of the show down in London, scoring a hat-trick as he continued his fine form playing in a central role.

Foden was clinical for City, scoring with his right foot, head and left foot, and his showing impressed Michail Antonio, who declared after the game ‘he’s got it all’.

For each of his goals, the academy product showcased a celebration that fans had not seen prior to the game – and afterwards, he explained the reason for it.

Foden was simply superb last night against the Bees, and was really at the heart of everything for the visitors.

Kevin De Bruyne and Julian Alvarez were both also playing in the middle, but Foden really dominated the game and was brilliant supporting Erling Haaland.

He got into the box a lot, and was then clinical with his finishing.

Him playing in this position is allowing Foden to get into more goalscoring positions and there are generally more opportunities for him to shoot.

And Foden is happy to oblige, and this is partly the reason for his new celebration.

After scoring his goals last night, Foden dropped to his knees and then used both hands to mimic a gun.

Afterwards he explained (via Man Cityy Instagram Story): It’s a bit of banter with the lads. They say I shoot a lot in the five-a-side games so they call me ‘The Sniper’. So I thought I had to pull it out today. Even when I arrived at the training ground there is a sniper on my locker now!”

We could be seeing this celebration a lot

So Foden has now been christened with a new nickname at City and it looks like it could be sticking.

Ruben Dias and also Kalvin Phillips both commented ‘Sniper’ on Foden’s latest Instagram post, and the 23-year-old certainly suits it.

He is a brilliant striker of the ball. His goal against Everton recently was an absolute bullet, and it’s great to see the City players acknowledging this trait of Foden’s.

It is amusing to hear that the players have put a sniper on Foden’s locker. They are unbelievable stars, but it is clearly a great dressing room packed with characters, and having banter and a solid team spirit is every bit as crucial to success.
