Player who Man City lost £7m on shares why he felt ‘like a sponge’ during his time at the Etihad Stadium

Manchester City are no strangers to seeing numerous players make moves in and out of the club.

For instance, the previous summer transfer window saw a wide range of players join and leave City.

In terms of incoming moves, Pep Guardiola’s side sealed a £33m deal for Savinho and brought Ilkay Gundogan back from Barcelona on a free transfer.

On the outgoing side of things, the Blues cashed in on the likes of Julian Alvarez, Joao Cancelo, Liam Delap and Sergio Gomez.

Now though, one forgotten face who made a permanent move away from City fairly recently has opened up about his spell at the Etihad Stadium.

Zack Steffen opens up on Man City spell

When asked in a recent interview with the Manchester Evening News about his time at City and what it was like to be coached by Guardiola, Zach Steffen gave this honest response.

He said: “It was very eye-opening. The focus, the commitment, the demand he had on his players in each and every training session to be as good as you can and to believe you are better than you are.

“He would push that every day. He believed in all his players and that is how he gets the best out of them with that demand and belief and throwing that confidence at you but also pushing you very hard and expecting a lot from you.

“You have to do that every day again and again and again. The first year I was just in awe. I was like a sponge trying to soak up everything.”

Steffen failed to make an impact at City

Back in December 2018, City secured a deal worth £7m (via BBC Sport) to sign Steffen from Columbus Crew before he eventually made his way to Manchester in the summer of 2019.

The shot-stopper completed two loan spells before eventually joining his current club Colorado Rapids on a free transfer in the previous January window.

Making just 21 appearances for the Citizens in all competitions, the 29-year-old conceded eight goals but managed to keep eight clean sheets.

Despite not being one of City’s more successful signings of the Guardiola era, the fact that Steffen has shared how much Guardiola demands from his players on the training ground highlights how tough it can be for certain players to adapt and feel comfortable as part of the squad.

In fact, Ederson said Guardiola is “annoying” because of how demanding he is behind the scenes last month.

This presumably is what has led to City winning so many trophies with the Catalan as their manager.
