Anton Ferdinand has likened Phil Foden to Paul Gascoigne, who is regarded as one of England’s greatest players of all time.

On FIVE’s official YouTube channel, the pundit was quizzed about whether the Manchester City technician bears any similarities to the ex-Lazio star.

Branded as “unreal” by Rio Ferdinand earlier this season, Phil Foden seems to be admired by both brothers.

Interestingly, Chris Sutton claimed in August that the £225,000-a-week (Sport Rac) midfielder is reaching Paul Gascoigne’s level after his stunning showing against Eddie Howe’s side.

Much like the former Newcastle legend in his heyday, Foden is also renowned for his quick feet, incredible technique and ability to turn a game on its head.

Anton Ferdinand, who compared Phil Foden to Paul Gascoigne gave an insight into the latter’s brilliance.

“What a player!”

“When you talk about England greats, he’s always mentioned. Always mentioned.”

“Not just that, I think just him as a player, people that when he played in England, watching him, week in, week out, he was always on the tip of your tongue. Always!”, he said on FIVE’s official YouTube channel.

When quizzed about whether Phil Foden is comparable to Paul Gascoigne, Anton Ferdinand replied, “That’s the only one other you can go [that makes sense].”

“Doesn’t care, no fear.”

Phil Foden is a unique kind of English talent

Much like Paul Gascoigne, the treble-winner is quite a different type of English player from the norm, which is perhaps why Anton Ferdinand views the pair similarly.

Generally, England have been associated with producing players, be it in any position that are renowned for their physical excellence and hard graft.

But players such as Phil Foden and Paul Gascoigne seem much more continental in their style of play, to the extent that they would not have looked out of place playing for a country like Spain, for instance.

Nowadays, England are producing technical phenoms frequently and Foden has been the pinnacle of this conveyor belt of unique talent.
