Shaka Hislop believes Phil Foden is currently the best player in the Premier League.

After Manchester City’s 3-1 victory against Manchester United on Sunday, Pep Guardiola made the same claim, as he believes the Englishman has been the most “decisive” player in the league so far.

Joleon Lescott also stated that the £225,000-a-week (Sport Rac) man is City’s most important player now.

Shaka Hislop says Phil Foden is the best player in the Premier League

After scoring a brilliant brace in the Manchester Derby, Foden took his goal tally to 11 in the league, while reaching an impressive 18 goals in all competitions.

The 23-year-old also managed to score his fifth and sixth goal in the derby in the league, leaving him just two goals behind the club’s all-time top goalscorer in the game, Sergio Aguero (eight).

Now, Shaka Hislop has emphasised that as things stand, Phil Foden is the best player in the Premier League.

“Right now, it’s hard to pick a better player [in the Premier League] than Phil Foden. And while we talk about Manchester City, you can talk about so many of their players, who at times, have outsized impact. Whether we’re talking Rodri or [Kevin] De Bruyne or [Erling] Haaland, despite his miss today”, he said [via ESPN UK].

Shaka Hislop also claimed that Phil Foden always manages to step up when it matters most for Manchester City.

“But somehow, whenever you need somebody to step up, Phil Foden just is there. Never seems to do an awful lot wrong, regardless and then when you need that performance, when you need that telling touch, he somehow is the one providing it.”

“So, while he may fly, in relative to his, below the radar, against some of those players for Manchester City, it’s hard to pick somebody who’s more important.”

Which Premier League player has been better than Phil Foden?

Some may perhaps argue with Shaka Hislop about Phil Foden being the best player in the Premier League.

But in all fairness, who has been better?

The likes of Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold have had excellent campaigns but have also been injured, while the former was also at the African Cup of Nations this year.

While Virgil van Dijk has been saving Liverpool’s blushes at the back, the same can be said for Phil Foden at Manchester City going forward.

Ollie Watkins has been sublime this season but simultaneously, the Stockport-born attacker is delivering with his boyhood club’s title hopes on the line.

The likes of Rodri and Declan Rice have also been splendid but Phil Foden has managed to score goals and assists in a side that has missed Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne for large chunks of the season, who may be the league’s two best players in general.

As a result, Hislop has a point, to say the least.
