‘Quality operator’: Journalist responds when asked if Man City want to sign £35m Newcastle star

Whether Manchester City are genuinely interested in pulling off a transfer for Newcastle United defender Sven Botman has been revealed.

This comes from journalist Ross Gregory on Steve Wraith’s NUFC Matters show, as he addressed the speculation surrounding the £35 million (Sky Sports) man.

With Sven Botman being linked with a move to Manchester City, whether there is any truth to these rumours has been answered.

Journalist reveals whether Sven Botman to Manchester City transfer rumours are credible

It was claimed on Sunday that the treble-winners were set to hold a ‘new round of talks’ with RB Leipzig in order to sign another left-footed centre-half in Josko Gvardiol.

While it is out in the open that Manchester City aim to get that deal over the line, whether the same is in the case for Sven Botman has come to the fore.

Steve Wraith opened, “One suggestion in one newspaper suggested that Botman was being linked with Man City. Ryan Yates [commenter] is asking, ‘is this just a bit of brinksmanship to get [Josko] Gvardiol over the line?’ I would say yes because Botman won’t be leaving Newcastle anytime soon.”

Journalist Ross Gregory replied to his suggestion by claiming that there is no chance that Manchester City-linked colossus Sven Botman leaves Newcastle, saying, “No, I don’t think he’ll be leaving anytime soon, I agree. But I don’t think we should be naïve to think there won’t be some admiring glances cast in his direction from other clubs.”

However, he did suggest that perhaps Manchester City were considering a move for Sven Botman, continuing, “But he’s proven that he’s a quality operator in the Premier League. And that’s what is going to happen for Newcastle. If your recruitment’s really good and you bring players in, and they’re a success, others clubs will be casting their glances. Clubs with more money or who can guarantee Champions League football season in, season out, like your Man City, Barcelona or whoever.”

“So, your Bruno’s [Guimaraes], your [Sven] Botman’s, your [Alexander] Isak’s, if they continue to play well, other clubs are going to be interested in them, that’s football.”

Unlikely that Manchester City try and sign him this summer

If Manchester City were interested in signing Sven Botman in the summer of 2022, one could still understand the rationale behind the interest.

The Dutchman is an intelligent reader of the game and is renowned for a brilliant ball-playing centre-back.

But with Newcastle having no reason to sell Botman and the Sky Blues clearly putting Gvardiol right at the top of their transfer wish list, an approach from them this summer in particular seems improbable.
