It has been reported that Manchester City are closing in on agreeing personal terms to complete a transfer for Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic.

This revelation comes from Fabrizio Romano, who revealed on Wednesday that both clubs were in ‘concrete talks’ to get a deal over the line for the £40 million (Sky Sports) man.

Now, it seems Manchester City have moved a step closer to sign Mateo Kovacic in the summer transfer window.

The Croatian international has one year left on his deal at Stamford Bridge, as he seems to be edging closer to a switch to the Etihad Stadium.

Pep Guardiola himself has been reported to be a huge admirer of the three-time Champions League winner as well.

Additionally, the Premier League champions are set to remain in contact with Mauricio Pochettino’s side over a fee, as it has been emphasised that the player ‘will leave’ in the summer.

Mateo Kovacic fits the bill of a Pep Guardiola midfielder

While the concerns around his injury record are understandable when assessing the potential transfer, it is worth saying that Mateo Kovacic ticks most of the boxes one needs to play for Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

For starters, just technically, the former Real Madrid man is one of the best in the league.

Kovacic’s ball-carrying ability from the middle of the park might only be second to De Bruyne in the country as well.

The silky midfielder’s passing range and ability to control games is also top-drawer, whilst off the ball, he is an expert tackler and can cover ground with ease.

Looking at all his traits, one can understand why City are seemingly as keen as they are on Kovacic’s signature.
