‘Really, really special’… Gary Neville says Man City have a 23-year-old ‘sensation’ in their ranks

Gary Neville says Manchester City have a player that might be even more special than Jude Bellingham.

Manchester City asserted their Manchester dominance once again on Sunday with a 3-1 win over Manchester United.

The neighbours actually took a shock lead through Marcus Rashford’s wonder strike but Pep Guardiola’s side fought back to win.

Phil Foden inspired the turnaround with a sensational brace as he fired in his own screamer and tucked away a nice finish after a smart one-two with Julian Alvarez.

Erling Haaland added a third in stoppage time to ensure City remain within a point of Premier League leaders Liverpool ahead of the blockbuster clash at the weekend.

Foden earned countless plaudits for his performance and Gary Neville was effusive in his praise.

Gary Neville’s praise for Phil Foden

Speaking on the Gary Neville podcast, Neville said: “He’s a sensation.

“I think that England have Bellingham, Foden, Kane, they’ve got real talented players but Foden for me is something really, really special.

“I said during the last World Cup, if we can’t make room for Phil Foden and can’t build around Phil Foden, we’re struggling. We need to put him in his best position.

“Whatever he feels that is, whatever the coach thinks that is, they can collaborate between them.

“For City, Pep Guardiola, I think he got him into the team, he pulled him out of the team, he got him in the team, he pulled him out for a year or two.

“You wondered if he was ever going to really cement the position but now he’s there in concrete.”

A potentially fantastic England team

England waited decades for a talent as sensational as Foden and then all of a sudden they’ve got loads at once.

The prospect of Foden lining up alongside Jude Bellingham at Euro 2024 is tantalising and it’s why the Three Lions are the favourites to win the tournament.

Both midfielders are enjoying fantastic seasons, with Bellingham ripping it up at Real Madrid, but it remains to be seen if they will play alongside each other.

There have been endless calls for the pair to join Declan Rice in a midfield three but Gareth Southgate’s history suggests Foden might be placed out wide.

England have four friendlies before the tournament kick-off to see how they may line up in Germany.
