Stewart Robson has claimed Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson made a “silly” mistake for the penalty he conceded in his side’s latest 1-1 draw against Liverpool.
Gary Neville also described the 30-year-old’s decision to try to boot the ball when it was evidently not going to fall into his path and foul Darwin Nunez in the process as a “moment of madness.”
Alexis Mac Allister capitalised from the spot-kick as City conceded a needless goal five minutes into the second half, which ultimately meant they dropped two points on Sunday.
Stewart Robson says Manchester City number one Ederson was “reckless” for the penalty he conceded against Liverpool
The Brazilian shotstopper has been guilty of making errors against Jurgen Klopp’s side in some way, shape or form.
During the 2021/2022 season, he let a tame effort from Diogo Jota bypass him in his side’s 2-2 draw against Liverpool.
During the 2017/2018 campaign, the treble-winner was caught way up the field as Mohamed Salah lobbed the ball over him into an empty net in the Sky Blues’ 4-3 defeat to the Reds.
As Ederson played a major role in Liverpool getting a goal back after taking Darwin Nunez out in the penalty area, Stewart Robson broke down why the Manchester City legend made a huge mistake.

“He didn’t have to dive in because he was never going to get there so it’s a poor pass by [Nathan] Ake, of course, it is. But once he realises that [Darwin] Nunez is going to get there first, he’s just going to hold him up because the touch from Nunez is always going to go towards the touchline. He’s still got to get in from a really impossible angle.”
“He should have stayed on his feet, held up Nunez, so there’s two mistakes. The first one was by Ake, the second one, probably just as bad was by Ederson, it was reckless, it was silly and he didn’t read the situation well enough”, he said [via ESPN FC].
Ederson should have done the basics in that situation
In our view, Stewart Robson is bang on the money about Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson, who could have just forced Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez out wide, making it almost impossible for him to find the back of the net.
However, a rush of blood, poor judgement of the situation or both seemed to have resulted in the five-time Premier League winner making an error which cost City the chance to clasp the all-important three points at Anfield.
Considering how experienced Ederson is, it was a surprise to see him making such a naïve mistake.
Upon reflection, the decorated goalkeeper will likely come to the realisation that he could have handled the situation much better.
However, even world-class players like Ederson are allowed to have off days and to excessively slate him after his error against Liverpool would also be uncalled for.
