Sam Allardyce believes Manchester City star Phil Foden has not been getting in the England team enough, and suggests he is now one of the best number 10s in the world

Foden has been the talk of the town this week following his hat-trick for City in the 3-1 win over Brentford on Monday.

The 23-year-old took his tally to 14 for the season, as he helped his side come from behind to take three big points and close the gap on Liverpool.

Foden was superb at the Gtech Community Stadium, with many pundits praising him since the game.

There has also been some talk about him in terms of England – and Allardyce insists he should be playing more…

Allardyce was speaking about Foden on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast, and wondered whether England manager Gareth Southgate actually sees him as a top pick.

When asked if it was fair to say now that Foden would get into any team, he said: “I don’t think he’s getting in the England team enough.

“I don’t think Gareth has got him as a number one. And I also think anywhere else though, is yes now. Centre midfield, wide left, wide right – any of those three positions.”

“By the fact of his assists as well as his goals now, I think he’s right up there (as one of the best number 10s). He had a lot of patience didn’t he, waiting and waiting (for his opportunity).”

Danny Murphy also spoke about Foden in terms of England earlier this week.

He also suggested he should be playing more, and believes he is a better player than Tottenham Hotspur’s James Maddison.

Foden should be an England regular no question

It almost doesn’t matter that much where Foden plays for England, just that he does.

You cannot possibly have a player of this talent sitting on the bench – he needs to be on the pitch hurting the opposition with his technical ability and relentless pressing.

It is remarkable to think that the £225,000-a-week star hasn’t really been able to establish himself as a Three Lions regular yet in his career accruing just 31 caps to date.

While he perhaps could have done more in an England shirt, it is largely on Gareth Southgate for overlooking him.
