Rio Ferdinand believes Phil Foden has been the “go-to guy” for Manchester City this season.

After City’s 3-1 win against Brentford, Pep Guardiola claimed that the 23-year-old could replace the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva one day.

The Catalan tactician also hailed the five-time Premier League winner’s displays by emphasising that he is having his best-ever campaign at City.

Last week, Alan Shearer also claimed that the £225,000-a-week [Sport Rac] man has become “undroppable” as far as this Sky Blues side goes.

While Danny Murphy tipped the Englishman to register 20 goals for City in all competitions this campaign; a feat he is yet to accomplish during his time at the Etihad Stadium.

Now, Rio Ferdinand has heaped praise on Phil Foden and how he has evolved into becoming the protagonist of this Manchester City team this campaign.

“But [Phil] Foden, he plays centrally, where he prefers to play, he said that recently and his impact has been phenomenal. He’s been one that’s been the go-to guy at City. Pep [Guardiola] said it in an interview, we spoke to him on TNT [Sports]”, he said on FIVE’s official YouTube channel.

“He’s been one that they’ve looked to in these moments when Kevin De Bruyne’s not been there. This is the most valuable that he’s been in their team in this whole time since he’s got in the first-team.”

Phil Foden showed his consistency against Everton as well

It is hard to disagree with Rio Ferdinand as Phil Foden seems to have embraced the pressure of carrying the burden of becoming the main man at Manchester City this season.

Even during his side’s latest 2-0 victory against Everton, while the likes of Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne emerged as the biggest talking points, the Stockport-born attacker was a class act as well.

Despite playing in his unnatural right-wing position, every time Foden got the ball, he had an impact with his clever passing and elegant carrying of the ball.

However, Phil Foden’s performance turned up a notch when he was shifted into a midfield role in the second half, as he helped up Manchester City’s momentum by taking on players, finding pockets of space in the middle of the park and linking the attack admirably well in what was yet another impressive outing from him.
