Wrexham’s prospective move for Manchester City defender Callum Doyle has prompted reaction from fans of Norwich City, Coventry City and Birmingham City.

Wrexham, who are owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, have agreed a fee of £8million for the Manchester City academy graduate.

Callum Doyle has not played competitively for City’s senior team, but he has enjoyed several loan spells at EFL sides.

The 21-year-old played for Sunderland in 2021/22, when they were in League One, and then took in loan stints at Coventry, Leicester, and Norwich.

Callum Doyle deemed ‘unbelievable signing’ for Wrexham

Fans of some of Wrexham’s rivals in the Championship either praised the Red Dragons for closing in on Doyle or wished that they had signed him instead.

One Norwich fan said on X: “He was excellent for us last season, What a coup that is for Wrexham!”

Another supporter wrote: “Doyle was unreal at LB last season at Norwich, would be perfect for our team, we need both another LCB and LB.”

A Coventry fan said: “Says it all – £8m for Doyle and Wrexham will end up getting him.

“What are we actually doing behind the scenes?

“Personal opinion and you don’t have to agree but our window of only signing quality makes no sense and I don’t blame Lampard.”

Meanwhile, a Birmingham supporter said: “Doyle is a quality signing for Wrexham. Might win a game now.”

And a Canaries fan said: “I know we shouldn’t fall in love with loan players, but Doyle is different.

“He’s a must-have signing after last season and how we are setting up.”

Manchester City set to sell player with ‘the world at his feet’

Norwich defender Shane Duffy was eager to sing Doyle’s praises after the 1-0 New Year’s Day victory at Luton Town.

“He’s got the world at his feet. He’s such a good player,” Duffy told Pinkun.

“Firstly, I think he’s just a great guy, he’s a great guy and he just wants to learn.

“It’s not like I haven’t enjoyed playing with Jose [Cordoba] or Grant [Hanley], but me and Callum have got this understanding.

“Callum probably understands English football a little bit more than Jose – he’s still adapting and has a massive future. I’m sure he will be playing soon.

“Callum Doyle is just so good. He makes me look so bad on the ball because he’s so good. He’s a joy to play with.”
