Robbie Savage says £44m Wolves player could easily play for Manchester City

Very few players in Europe would walk into the starting XI at Manchester City right now.

Despite a wobbly 2024/25 campaign under Pep Guardiola – which has left the Citizens sitting fifth in the Premier League – there is still a world class footballer in most positions, with Erling Haaland leading the line, a Ballon d’Or winner in Rodri marshalling the midfield and a truly elite defensive talent in Josko Gvardiol at the back.

Even Omar Marmoush – who scored 20 goals and provided 14 assists for Eintracht Frankfurt before his £59m January move to the Etihad Stadium – was left out of the starting XI for the FA Cup win over Bournemouth on Sunday.

Despite this, Robbie Savage has now claimed that Matheus Cunha would start for Manchester City if he swapped Wolves for the Etihad Stadium right now.

What Robbie Savage said about Matheus Cunha

The £44m Wolves talisman admitted last week that he is looking to leave Molineux this summer, saying: “I’ve made it clear that I need to take the next step. I want to fight for titles, for big things. I have potential.”

During a discussion about where Cunha could end up, Savage boldly claimed that the Brazilian could play for Manchester City “right now” if Hugo Viana brought him to the Etihad Stadium.

Speaking to Chris Sutton on BBC 606, the 50-year-old said: “If you’re him, Chris, if you’re him, you’d want to go and play for a club that’s going to challenge for honours… I think he could play for City right now.”

Cunha’s versatility is one trait that could get him into the Manchester City side right now, having played as a traditional striker, attacking midfielder, left and right winger for Wolves already this season, scoring 15 goals in 29 appearances across all competitions.

Matheus Cunha would have a friend at Manchester City if a move does materialise

There have been very few reports suggesting Cunha is a target for Manchester City – who want Florian Wirtz – this summer.

However, if a move does end up happening, the South American would at least have a friend at the Etihad Stadium in Matheus Nunes – who admires Marmoush.

The pair made 21 appearances together while at Wolves, with Cunha previously calling the Manchester City No.27 his “brother” on Instagram.
