Manchester City are very accustomed when it comes to signing top players.

Since Pep Guardiola took charge of City back in 2016, a wide range of talented players have made their way to the Etihad Stadium and have very successful spells at the club.

With the Citizens winning multiple domestic and European trophies over recent years, this highlights the strength City have in their squad.

Having seen another summer transfer window come and go, as well as having a strong start to their latest Premier League campaign, one pundit and former top-flight manager has pinpointed one particular player he’s a big fan of at City.

Sam Allardyce names Ilkay Gundogan as the best summer signing

Sam Allardyce was not shy when asked in a recent edition of No Tippy Tappy Football who he feels has been the best signing of the recent summer transfer window.

He said: “Well [Ilkay] Gundogan’s the best. I mean because he was free and he’s world-class and Man City lost him only a year ago

“I watched him when I was at Leeds when he played against us in my first game for Leeds and watched him on the touchline and went wow.

“I know I watched him in the stand and I knew I’d watched him on the telly but watching him when you’re on the touchline he’s so good.

“Just the overall package like he’s not going to have to settle in, he already knows everybody, he’s not cost any money transfer-wise and he’s a top international player who played for Man City only a year ago.

“All they’ve got to stump up is his wages which they’re used to paying anyway so that’s just got to be the best pound-for-pound signing in this window.”

Gundogan could be vital for Man City again

After making over 300 appearances for City between 2016 and 2023, the midfielder made a return to the club last month on a free transfer from Barcelona.

In his previous season with the Blues, Gundogan captained City to their historic Treble, scoring some vital goals along the way.

Allardyce isn’t the only pundit to praise City’s re-signing of the 33-year-old, as Martin Keown also named Gundogan as being the best signing by a Premier League club over the summer.

Even though the German has yet to start a game for his club this season, it’s undeniable that he’ll be an important figure for the Blues once they start getting involved in other competitions beyond the Premier League.
