Shaun Wright-Phillips admitted Manchester City have one young talent who has always impressed him.

Manchester City played their first pre-season match of the summer against Celtic on Wednesday morning.

Pep Guardiola‘s side lost the game 4-3, but there were plenty of positives to take for the Spaniard, who was without a big chunk of his first-team following the Euros and the Copa America.

A plethora of youngsters featured against the Scottish giants, with the likes of James McAtee, Maximo Perrone and Rico Lewis all catching the eye in particular.

Arguably the star of the show though was Oscar Bobb, who scored one and set up the other two.

Bobb’s performance was lapped up by fans on social media and after the game, he came in for praise from former City winger Shaun Wright-Phillips.

This time last year, Oscar Bobb had just been promoted to Pep’s first-team squad.

This was on the recommendation of sporting director of Txiki Begiristain, and the Norway international gave a great account of himself in 2023/24.

He ended up making 26 appearances across all competitions.

Bobb mostly came on as a substitute in games, and the player will now be hoping for more minutes in 2024/25. On the evidence of his performance against Celtic, he is certainly ready for more involvement.

After the game, Shaun Wright-Phillips gave his thoughts on Bobb on the official Man City YouTube channel: “Honestly, he’s always impressed me when I watch him play.

“Whether he scores or whether he does, the attributes that he brings to the game are something different.

“The (Man City) kids just played against a Champions League side, they held their own and I’m proud of what I saw.”

Oscar Bobb needs more minutes in 2024/25

Bobb was amazing against Celtic and City fans everywhere will be hoping to see more of him in 2024/25.

It is clear to see that he has the potential to be a very special player. It is now just about whether he gets that show of faith from the manager.

Thankfully, Bobb is very versatile. So this is bound to mean more opportunities for the 21-year-old.

We’ve heard Guardiola talk up his ability in the pockets of space, so perhaps we will be seeing him in those central positions a bit more in 2024/25, especially if the plan is to rotate Kevin De Bruyne a bit more.

It was recently suggested that Bobb could be used in deal to help City bring Bruno Guimaraes to the Etihad. But that is not something City should be entertaining.

He is a seriously exciting talent, who should not only be kept, but used more.
