Paul Merson ‘shocked’ by Manchester City decision to sell Cole Palmer to Chelsea
With the Englishman set to join Mauricio Pochettino’s side, it was revealed on Thursday that the treble-winners have no intention to replace him as well.
After Jeremy Doku’s arrival, it seems like the plan is for him to become the club’s long-term Riyad Mahrez replacement.
Now, Paul Merson has explained why he has been surprised to see Manchester City decide to sell Cole Palmer to Chelsea.

“I think he’s a good player. I thought after the Community Shield, I thought he’d get a little bit more time at Man City when he came on and scored the goal [against Arsenal]. So, yeah, a bit shocked if I’m being honest. Bit shocked but good signing, good player, you know, he’s got a bit of guile about him.”
Paul Merson also pinpointed that considering the Sky Blues decided to sell as talented a prospect as Cole Palmer to Chelsea, perhaps they do not view them as a threat currently.
“Chelsea, when they play, 10 sit behind the ball so he’s one of them, not so much of a dribbler but he can find that pass and score a goal. Yeah, good signing. Pretty shocked. It just shows you at the moment that Man City don’t think that Chelsea are that much of a threat to them.”
Manchester City, especially under Pep Guardiola tend to open their exit door for players that are keen on an exit and Cole Palmer was no exception to the rule; and that’s that from the looks of it.
