Manchester City have had a rather successful start to their 2024/25 season so far.

After beating Manchester United in the Community Shield, City have gone on to win both of their two opening Premier League games against Chelsea and Ipswich Town.

In terms of matters off the field, the Manchester club have been involved in numerous deals throughout the latest summer transfer window.

With the window set to close in a few days and the season set to carry on over the next months, a pundit has shared his reaction to one significant thing City have done recently.

Paul Merson amazed by Man City resigning Ilkay Gundogan

Following Ilkay Gundogan’s return to City on a free transfer from Barcelona, Paul Merson had this to say on the move on Sky Sports Football (24/8 12:33 pm).

He said: “He is a massive player and to get him back on a free transfer is absolutely amazing. It’s a great signing. It’s unfair, it’s unfair.

“The lad is an amazing player, an amazing professional. I couldn’t talk highly enough of him. Honestly, I think he is an amazing signing.

“Just can’t believe their luck. They get rid of [Julian] Alvarez for £80m and get this lad back on a free transfer.”

Landing Gundogan is a smart move from City

Merson isn’t the first pundit to weigh in on this particular move the Blues have now made, as Martin Keown said that Gundogan’s return has now made it more difficult for other clubs to beat City.

Scoring 60 goals and supplying 38 assists in his first seven-year spell with Pep Guardiola’s side, the 33-year-old then went on to find the back of the net five times and deliver 14 assists in 51 appearances for Barcelona last season.

To be able to bring back such an experienced, versatile and talented player like Gundogan back to the club he’s had a lot of success with previously on a free transfer, this is a very smart piece of business from the Manchester club.
