Paulo Silva, the father of Manchester City stalwart Bernardo Silva has confirmed that his son dreams of returning to Benfica one day.

In an interview with A Bola, he discussed the £43 million (BBC Sport) man’s decision to sign a one-year contract extension with Pep Guardiola’s men.

As the decision from Bernardo Silva to stay at Manchester City was addressed, so was his desire to join Benfica as well.

Branded as ‘unique’ by Pep Guardiola (via Manchester City’s official website), the Portuguese international’s decision to stay at the Etihad Stadium until 2026 has left the club’s fanbase unanimously pleased.

Even Txiki Begiristain acknowledged that the 29-year-old is an ‘exceptional’ player, as he was buzzing to have tied him down to a brand-new deal.

However, Bernardo Silva remains keen on a return to Benfica, according to his father.

“There was also a very strong approximation, with a proposal and will on the part of PSG. And there was continuity of interest from Barcelona, which year after year has wanted Bernardo in the squad. Of course, there was also a desire to keep Bernardo at City. Things were structured and the decision was made with our feet on the ground.”

After revealing the number of sides that were keen on signing Bernardo Silva, his father did admit that his son still dreams of becoming a Benfica player.

“Year by year and step by step we’re seeing what the opportunities are, we cannot make a decision in three years based on a hypothesis that may or may not happen. Obviously, Bernardo is a Benfica fan and wants to return to Benfica.”

“Is it three years from now? It doesn’t seem to me that the decision to extend with City for another year is related to going to Benfica when he turns 32. It could be a possibility, which is a strong possibility in fact, but I wouldn’t put it as a preparation for that.”

Manchester City fans will hope that Bernardo Silva stays put beyond 2026 and only joins Benfica when he is past his prime, as his father has implied that his plan in place is not leave English football right after his current contract expires.
